On February 19 the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Italy, His Excellency Omar Obaid Al Shamsi, went on an official visit to Parma, the Italian Capital of Culture 2020, to discuss a twinning with the Mayor Federico Pizzarotti.
Accompanied by Mr. Ali Al-Nuaimi, Head of the Economic Section of the Embassy, the Ambassador was welcomed in the Municipality of Parma by the Mayor, together with the Councilor for Culture Michele Guerra and the Councilor for Productive Activities Cristiano Casa. Also present at the meeting were the Director of the Teatro Regio Anna Maria Meo, the coordinator of Parma 2020 Francesca Velani and the Chief of Staff Francesco Cirillo.
The meeting was an opportunity to discuss the many elements in common between the city of Parma and the United Arab Emirates and to discuss various cooperation projects in the cultural, tourism and commercial fields. From Anna Maria Meo came the proposal to bring the Verdi Festival – the important Italian opera music festival now in its twentieth edition – to Expo 2020.
Councilor Cristiano Casa pitched the idea of a tourist exchange system that will creates tailor-made proposals according to the nationality of visitors, also extended to districts outside the main urban centers and aimed at promoting local products. Councilor Michele Guerra, on the other hand, proposed the cultural promotion of the Parma 2020 model through business organizations and the establishment of relationships between local industries and universities.
“Culture unites peoples, Italian culture is what brings your country to the whole world” declared the ambassador, who, after signing the guest book of the city of Parma, invited the mayor to an institutional visit to Expo 2020, that will take place in the United Arab Emirates, in Dubai.
Ambassador Al Shamsi then met the president of Unione Industriali Annalisa Sassi and the representatives of Fiere di Parma and the CCIAA, with the aim to start a collaboration also in the economic field.
