Italy’s Eni and the Sharjah National Oil Company (SNOC) began producing gas and condensate in the Mahani field, less than one year after their discovery of this field.

The Mahani field is located in Block B in Sharjah, and this field is the first new production onshore in Sharjah since the early 1980s.

Eni CEO Claudio Descalzi said: “The start of production has been achieved in less than two years since the signing of the contract and one year since the announcement of the discovery thanks to the fruitful and continuous cooperation with SNOC. This is a major achievement that we need to be proud of, given also the exceptional challenges. Incurred during the year due to the Covid-19 epidemic”.

Descalzi added, “The exploration operations in Sharjah have ended since the 1980s. However, together with SNOC, we have demonstrated that using the latest technologies and high-level competencies also can reveal new potentials.

SNOC owns a 50% stake in Area B and is the operator, while Eni owns the remaining 50%. The Italian company won the region after a competitive bidding round in January 2019.

The Italian company announced the discovery of Mahani-1 in January 2020. Eni had tested the well with 50 million cubic feet (1.4 million cubic meters) per day of light-density gas and associated condensate.

Eni has been operating in Abu Dhabi since 2018.
